Mysterious Pitting Edema?

Mysterious Pitting Edema?
40 yr old male, minimal white sugar eater, in apparent good health until 12/07, when I suddenly developed pitting edema of the lower legs and feet. Simultaneously my stomach/waistline began to expand rapidly, so that by now, 4/23/08, I have gained 50 lbs. Blood tests show normal kidney, liver, and thyrhoid function. Heart stress tests show clear valves (healthy heart).

A sonogram of the legs revealed an insufficient venous system, but the cause of this insufficiency remains elusive. An abdominal scan/search has yet to be done. In addition to the edema I have shortness of breath, to the point that even taking the dog downstairs has me panting when we get back.

I am hoping that someone here can give me a clue as to what may be going on. :) Oh yes, I have indeed been going to a primary care physician since January, as well as a cardiologist. Four months later, however, and no diagnosis has been made. I am very concerned by now.

Sounds like you have what I do...Congestive Heart Failure. This is caused by your heart not being able to pump as efficiently as it should. Your mention of an insufficient venous system ( problem is common in those with coronary artery disease).Mine was very hard to diagnose. My cardiologist got me fixed right up though.

In most cases, heart failure is a process that occurs over time, when an underlying condition damages the heart or makes it work too hard, weakening the organ. Heart failure is characterized by shortness of breath (dyspnea) and abnormal fluid retention, which usually results in swelling (edema) in the feet and legs. It can also swell your chest cavity, making you look barrel chested.

My CHF was brought on by chemotherapy. Since mine was drug induced, it may eventually clear itself up. I take medication for it daily and have it under almost complete control. I am no longer short of breath, but do swell on occassion. Other things that can cause CHF in a young person (it is very rare in those under age 50. I am the same age as you)... use of illegal drugs ( especially cocaine),high cholesterol, etc.

venous insufficiency diagnosis

Chronic venous insufficiency, manifesting as disabling open leg ulcers, lipodermatosclerosis and severe cutaneous hyperpigmentation is thought to affect five percent of the population over age 80 and a significant proportion, probably greater than one percent, of Western populations under age 65. To date little has been known about how to treat this condition cost-effectively beyond supportive and palliative care. Thus, the most important feature of Chronic Venous Insufficiency is that it descri
