One of the most unfortunate ulcers that a person can get is a venous stasis ulcer. This is an ulcer on the leg that occurs because the vein in the leg does not transport the blood back to the heart properly. This process can be very painful if left untreated. As a result, the blood gets backed up and this causes some of the blood to seep into the surrounding tissues. This then breaks down the tissue, which creates ulcers. This type of ulcer typically occurs in the lower leg on either side. They will appear above the ankle but below the calf. Because this can cause a dangerous infection, it is important to recognize the symptoms so you can get the treatment you need.
The positive side of venous stasis is that the ulcers actually can be prevented. There are warning signs that an ulcer is about to form, so if you are well versed in those signs, you can spot it before it is too late. The first sign that an ulcer is about to form is dark red or purple skin. It actually can cause the skin to be itchy or irritated. If you notice this, even a little bit, it is important to see your physician. These signs typically mean that an ulcer has not formed yet, so your doctor will be able to prevent it from forming.
If you end up with an ulcer, it is good to know that it can be treated. The most common treatment for a venous stasis ulcer is to increase the circulation in the area. This was the problem in the first place, so you basically are just reversing what happened. You can increase circulation in a few ways. When you are sitting down, try to elevate your legs so they are above the heart. During the day, you also should try to use compression stockings because they will help circulate the blood flow in your legs.
The worst case scenario for a venous stasis ulcer is skin grafting or even vein surgery. This typically only has to take place if the ulcer has not healed after six months of circulation treatment. If you have a history of obesity, lack of exercise, smoking and work that requires a lot of standing, you are more at risk for this disorder. If you fit into this list, you should do all you can to increase your circulation even when you do not have an ulcer.
Surgery is an option. There are new and innovative surgical techniques out there but you need to find a qualified physician to perform this procedure for it to be effective.
